In some cases, a combined orthodontic and surgical correction of the relationship of the jaw positions and the position of the teeth within them will be required. Surgical correction to 'straighten' the jaw(s) is called orthognathic surgery.

Orthognathic surgery is performed by an oral maxillofacial surgeon and the procedure corrects jaw irregularities to improve the patient's ability of chew, speak, breathe and also facial appearance.
